The app is now targetting newer Android APIs, which does result in one user facing change: in order for the app to be allowed background location updates (for widgets), you must give permission via the appâs system settings -> Location screen. You will need to change it so itâs allowed access all the time (and not just when using the app).
Additionally, you should be prompted to allow notifications to be sent if youâre a subscriber on launch. If you donât get prompted, theyâll have been most likely switched off by the system, even if they were on previously. So best to access the appâs system settings -> Notifications to turn back on. As for new subscribers, youâll be prompted to when you turn any notifications on, but again if youâre not, do so via system settings.

Apple Weather integrated just in time before Dark Skyâs servers shut down for good at the end of the month. At the moment, you need to switch to it via Settings > Source. It will become the new default next month. Thank you for your patience receiving this update and your continued support! Although the app is currently not in active development, it will not be abandoned. There was a lot of work required to get this update through, so hopefully this offers reassurance that you can rely on Appy Weather to continue to exist for as long as possible. The planned rewrite will happen, I just canât commit on when.

Quick check-in to clarify why there have been less updates recently. Iâve begun development of the next version of Appy Weather that will meaningfully reimagine and level up the experience. It will reflect all the learnings from the last two years of close communication with my users.
It will also adopt the latest native technologies to ensure the app feels at home on any Android device. Iâm hoping for it to be ready later this year. I know thatâs some time away, but I intend to make the wait worthwhile. In the meantime, expect update frequency to remain less than normal, pushed out mostly when necessary. This is an update that has taken much longer than I imagined, but Iâm feeling good that it will have been worth the long hours/wait. It brings major improvements to the one area thatâs come up for frequent enough criticism that I knew I had to urgently address: the radar. The improvements however havenât come for free. Radar has been re-designed based on user feedback â itâs effectively a 2.0 update. Letâs dive in!
1) Plus users can now zoom in as close or as far away as theyâd like with access to
all OpenWeather map layers, including the new humidity, pressure, dew point and wind layers (in total, Plus users now get
eight layers)
2) Pro users now have access to
premium map images via
AerisWeather with more than 10 map layers available in hourly increments (of course, they get access to the OpenWeather map improvements too)
3) In order for these improvements to be possible for Plus & Pro users, a new subscription tier has been added: ⥠Pro that unlocks additional AerisWeather map layers related to severe weather (fire, storms, lightning, cyclones), sea (wave height, temperature) & air quality

Finally, itâs important to note that you can currently only zoom in/out +-1 zoom levels (you can however set the default zoom to whatever you like now) and the playback is for +2 hours/days at a time â this is because due to current limitations with volume of requests available, I need to be cautious with how many new map images are requested every minute but be rest assured with time there will be optimisations based on usage levels that will result in these restrictions to be relaxed, if not removed

The FAQ has also been updated to answer the question I've been asked repeatedly since the news broke about Dark Sky joining Apple. Short answer: nothing changes đ One or more alternative (to begin with) & eventually replacement (when the Dark Sky API shuts at the end of 2021) weather providers will be introduced in the coming months; I expect there to be a suitable option available for everyone before Dark Sky is removed in 18 months. Seems faster? It should! Significant optimisation work across the board that should lead to faster start-up times and a more buttery smooth experience when navigating the app (special mention to scrolling on the Timeline, which should no longer feel jerky at any point). However, these improvements haven't come free unfortunately. App download/storage size has temporarily increased as a result (more than double the download size, and more than triple storage size). In terms of trade-offs, it was the improved performance justifies this size increase, but will be actively looking for ways in future updates to maintain the same level of performance whilst reducing size back to a number closer to pre-performance gains.
