THE UWP APP GAP - EXHIBIT A: APPLE DESIGN AWARDS 2017

Microsoft can continue building some of the nicest hardware in the business, but their third-party app story needs to start competing with Apple's for them to remain relevant moving forward. For comparison, check out the Windows Developer Awards for 2017. Their app of the year, djay Pro, as impressive as it is, isn't even a true UWP but an iOS port using Microsoft’s Project Islandwood bridge. Considering how much Microsoft is pushing UWP, this sends a contradictory message on the platform's native capabilities as well as to developers who've gone all-in on it. But maybe the intention was to get other iOS developers on board by making Islandwood take the stage in a big way; it becomes a much easier pitch to get iOS apps through the bridge when Microsoft can claim that their app of the year did.
